Agriculture sector gets a lift with Korean donation 

Berea – on Thursady 3rd October, Lesotho through the Ministry of Agriculture received a donation of modern farming equipment from Republic of Korea.

The handover ceremony held at Ha-Foso in Berea saw the ministry receive 12 tractors, 12 ploughs, four harrows, and two maize planters.

In opening, Mabafokeng ‘Mantutle, Acting Director of Crop Services expressed deep gratitude to South Korea for its support, She noted that the support alligns with the countrys efforts to commercialise agriculture and improve production system and food security.

“This support comes at a very critical time for the Lesotho agriculture sector,” she said. The machinery will improve our capacity to prepare land for cultivation which is often hamppered by manual processes.

She further said if the challenges are adressed, they expect to see improved cultivation results and higher yields.

The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Thabo Mofosi also thanked the Republic of Korea for their generous donation, Mofosi emphasised that the donation will help in increased cereal production.

“ This machinery is a game changer for cereal production , it will not only boost agricultural output but will also improve food security for many households across the country,” he noted

In addition, he stated the equipment is anticipated to increase fodder production which is critical for supporting livestock and most importantly sustaining other agricultural activities.

 He indicated that the introduction of the morderrn machinery is expected to streamline farming processes , reduce labour intensity and ultimately lead to higher yields.

Speaking on behalf of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Heong Joon Park, Director of Agriculture Cooperation said their government is proud to support Lesotho in its Journey towards agriculture mordenisation.

“ we believe this equipmemt will not only increase productivity but also empower local farmers to become self-reliantand competetive in global markets,” he noted

He said it is their hope that the partnership will contribute to sustainable development.

Agriculture remains a conerstone of the Lesotho’s economy and the donation is anticipated to have far reaching effects in strengthning the country’s production system, boosting rural income and also contributing to national economic growth.
