Basotho National Party mourn Tito Mboweni

Tito Mboweni, who passed away on 13 October 2024 after a short illness, is being mourned by the Basotho National Party (BNP).

Mboweni made history as South Africa’s first black labor minister, central bank governor, and finance minister. His connection with the BNP dates back to the 1980s during apartheid, when Lesotho, under BNP rule, opposed the oppressive regime despite its geographical isolation.

Mboweni studied political science and economics at the National University of Lesotho, where he was a student activist against apartheid. He played a notable role during the 1982 Maseru raid and later married ‘Mamokotlana Molise, a Lesotho broadcaster. Mboweni’s ties with the BNP and the African National Congress (ANC) helped strengthen relations between the two movements. He is remembered for his deep commitment to Lesotho and its people, and his passing leaves a void in the relationship between Lesotho and South Africa.

The BNP honors his life and legacy, proud of his remarkable achievements.
