The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences (DCEO) has concluded its preliminary investigation into the procurement of ballot papers for Lesotho’s 2022 general elections, clearing the process of any violations. This announcement came in a letter dated 16 August 2024, addressed to SECTION 2, a civic group that had raised concerns about the prolonged investigation.
In their initial letter, dated 15 July 2024, SECTION 2 expressed alarm over the nearly two-year delay in resolving the ballot paper procurement investigation. The group highlighted how such delays could erode public trust in Lesotho’s electoral processes, undermining confidence in the democratic system and potentially affecting voter participation in future elections. SECTION 2 emphasized the urgency of concluding the investigation and restoring public confidence.
Responding a month later, the DCEO, led by Adv. Knorx Molelle, stated that its preliminary inquiries had found no violations or criminality in the procurement process. The letter reassured SECTION 2 that the DCEO had thoroughly investigated the matter in line with Lesotho’s procurement regulations and found no evidence of corruption.
The DCEO expressed gratitude for SECTION 2’s vigilance and encouraged the group to continue its role as a corruption watchdog, reinforcing the importance of civic involvement in upholding accountability and transparency in the country.
