On this day 2 August 1991, two months after being dethroned as the head of the Lesotho government, former army commander and head of government, Major General Justin Metsing Lekhanya was placed under house arrest by the soldiers.
Lekhanya, who had governed the country since 20 January 1986 until he was deposed by the soldiers on 2 May 1991, coincidentally the day that King Moshoeshoe II was supposed to have celebrated his 31st birthday as a king until he was ousted from power by Lekhanya on 12 November 1990, was suspected of conspiring to return to power via using the soldiers who were still loyal to him.
