Basotho’s Preferred Living Wages from Social Media Polls

In a recent survey conducted by Lesotho Tribune in collaboration with Data Matrix across three major social media platforms—Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp—we sought to gauge the preferred living wage among employed individuals.

The question posed was simple: “For those who are employed, what is your preferred living wage?”

Respondents were presented with four options, ranging from M2000 to M7500, with an additional option of “Ho sebetsa ke lehlohonolo” (translated as “Working is a privilege”).

Below we present a detailed analysis of the responses, breaking down the results by platform.

Poll Results by Platform

Facebook Results

  • n=468
  • Z= 95%

X Results

  • n= 137
  • Z= 95%

WhatsApp Results

  • n = 183
  • Z =95%

Combined Results Analysis

To provide a comprehensive view, we combined the responses from all three platforms. This aggregate analysis helps in understanding the overall sentiment towards living wage preferences among the employed.

  • n = 788
  • Z=95%

What do these results mean?

The data indicates a clear preference for higher living wages among the employed respondents. Across all platforms, the M5500 – M7500 range emerged as the most preferred option, particularly on X, where nearly half of the respondents chose this option.

Interestingly, the option “Ho sebetsa ke lehlohonolo” received a notable 26% on X, significantly higher than on Facebook and WhatsApp. This suggests a segment of the Twitter population views employment itself as a privilege, independent of wage levels.

The margin of error across platforms varies, with the smallest margins observed on Facebook due to its larger sample size. The combined results offer a broader perspective, showing a relatively low margin of error, indicating a high level of confidence in the findings.

Conclusion

This poll provides valuable insights into the wage expectations of employed individuals across different social media platforms. The preference for higher wages is evident, with the M5500 – M7500 range being the most favored.
