Entire Minopex Workforce Risks Losing Jobs

Johan Coetzee, Area Manager of Minopex Lesotho, wrote a memo to all employees on August 28, 2024, announcing that Letseng Diamond Mine (LDM) has officially communicated its intention not to renew its current contract with Minopex beyond October 31, 2024. This decision, if finalized, will lead to the complete termination of all Minopex operations at LDM, which constitutes the company’s sole business presence in Lesotho.

The implications of this potential contract termination are substantial, with all Minopex Lesotho employees at risk of retrenchment. In accordance with the Lesotho Labour Code, Minopex is required to consult with affected employees to explore potential alternatives to retrenchment and minimize the impact on the workforce.

However, Coetzee indicated that, given the total cessation of services at LDM, the company has not identified any viable alternatives to retrenchment. Employees are encouraged to monitor LDM’s notice boards, where vacancies resulting from this transition will be posted, providing an opportunity to apply for positions that match their skill sets.

This prospective workforce reduction is expected to affect all Minopex Lesotho employees currently engaged at LDM. If no alternative solutions are identified during the consultation process, the final working day for all affected staff will coincide with the contract’s expiration on October 31, 2024.

Minopex remains committed to fulfilling its legal obligations and ensuring that all necessary procedures are followed during this challenging period. The company deeply regrets the uncertainty this situation brings and extends its gratitude to all employees for their continued dedication and professionalism in the face of these developments.
