Gvt Denies Need for Food Subsidies Despite Data Indicating Necessity

- Rising Costs and Stagnant Incomes putting households on brink of famine - Food costs account 53.1% of inflation

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report from the Bureau of Statistics reveals a significant increase in the cost of living in Lesotho, with annual inflation reaching 7.1% in April 2024. This rise in inflation, driven primarily by increases in food, transportation, and education costs, presents a daunting challenge for households already struggling with stagnant incomes.

This report brings to light that government of Lesotho’s “resistance” to subsidise staples is ill informed. Minister in the prime minister office, spoke in tongues a few weeks ago when responding to opposition political parties call for immediate food subsidies in order to ease pressure on households.
