Lesotho is gearing up for an exhilarating new event in the world of athletics: the Mountain Marathon 21. Scheduled for October 26, this highly anticipated race follows closely on the heels of the Minet Marathon, which takes place on October 5. A SCENIC CHALLENGE
The Mountain Marathon 21 is a half marathon, covering a distance of 21.5 km. The race wi,l begin in the picturesque Ha-Noosi Village and culminate at Melele Ground in Qacha’s Nek. This Marathon holds the distinction of being Lesotho’s first World Athletics (WA) certified half marathon, adhering to the official 21.1 km distance

During a press briefing a Lancer’s Inn Hotel, Mosiuoa Nthakong, a member of the organising committee, announced that the race is open to both local and international runners. INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION AND RANKING
Tšeliso Pheta, President of the Federation of Athletics Lesotho, confirmed that the race has officially been listed at an international level, which is expected to draw international competitors. The Mountain Marathon 21 has been placed in category F, the entry level for international athletes. Phetha highlighted the benefits of this international recognition, noting that it allows competitors to earn valuable points towards qualifying for prestigious global races, including World Championships
INCLUSIVE COMPETITIONS AND IMPRESSIVE PRIZES
In addition to the main half marathon, the event will feature a 5 km race open to veterans (35 years and above), youth (16 years and under), and unaffiliated athletes. There will also be a 25 km cycling race. The prize structure for the main event is impressive, with winners of both the men’s and women’s open categories receiving M150,000 each, making it Lesotho’s highest paying half marathon. The runners up will receive M100,000, third place M60,000, fourth place M30,000 and fifth place M20,000. For the 5 km race and the 25 km cycling race, winners in both men’s and women’s catgories will receive M3,000, with second place getting M2,500, third place M2,000, fourth place M1,500, and fifth place M1,000.
REGISTRATION DETAILS
The entry fees for the main event are set to encourage wide participation. Local participants will pay M1,000, African athletes will pay M2,500, and international athletes will pay M4,500. These fees ensure that the event is accessible to a diverse group of runners while also supporting the logistical and organisational needs of a world-class marathon.
