In an official statement issued in the 24 July, the Law Society of Lesotho has addressed the growing concerns over misconduct among some members of the legal profession. The statement comes amid increasing complaints from the public about lawyers misappropriating clients’ funds and failing to remit monies owed to them.
The Law Society expressed deep regret over the distress caused by these incidents, emphasizing that the integrity and trust of the legal profession are paramount. “We acknowledge and deeply regret the distress caused by incidents involving the mishandling and misappropriation of clients’ funds by some lawyers,” the statement read. “The integrity and trust of our profession are paramount, and we are committed to upholding these principles with utmost diligence.”
The society highlighted that numerous complaints have been received regarding financial misconduct by lawyers, with the primary issue being the failure to remit funds owed to clients. Each reported case is being investigated thoroughly, reflecting the society’s zero-tolerance policy towards any form of misconduct within the profession.
“The Law Society of Lesotho maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of misconduct in the legal profession, whether it is against the public, the courts, or fellow colleagues,” the statement continued. “We are unwavering in our commitment to ensuring that all lawyers adhere strictly to the highest standards of professional conduct and ethics.”
In an effort to address and rectify instances of malpractice swiftly and decisively, the Law Society is implementing robust measures. Lawyers found guilty of misconduct will face the full extent of disciplinary action, underscoring the society’s dedication to protecting the public and maintaining the profession’s integrity.
