The Managing Director (MD) of the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC), Mr. Mohlomi Seitlheko, convened an emergency meeting with LEC staff on Friday, June 14. This meeting was prompted by a previous commitment made by Mr. Seitlheko, promising that employees’ bonuses for the 2023-2024 financial year would be disbursed in June.
During the meeting, the atmosphere was tense as employees expected to hear definitive news about their bonuses. However, their hopes were dashed when Mr. Seitlheko revealed that the LEC is facing severe financial difficulties and that he would be seeking an urgent bailout from Dr. Retselisitsoe Matlanyane, the Minister of Finance and Development Planning.
“Instead of providing a clear timeline for our bonuses, the MD informed us that the company is broke and that he would be meeting with the Minister to request a bailout,” an LEC employee reported.
The staff, expressing their dissatisfaction, have commenced a go-slow until the close of business on Friday, June 14. They have also threatened a full-blown strike if their bonuses are not paid.
