As a way of boosting public health in Lesotho, the Minister of Health, Hon. Selibe Mochoboroane, has announced the acquisition of advanced cold chain equipment designed significantly to enhance the nation’s vaccine storage and transportation capabilities.
The new resources include 255 free vaccine carriers, 32 free cold boxes and a remote temperature monitoring device, 300 fridge tags, and 380 log tags. This extensive contribution is set to improve the efficiency and reliability of Lesotho’s vaccine delivery system, ensuring that vaccines remain effective from the point of manufacture to administration.
At the official handover ceremony, Mochoboroane underscored the vital importance of maintaining an efficient cold chain infrastructure. “The importance of maintaining an efficient cold chain infrastructure cannot be overstated, especially in our efforts to protect public health,” he emphasized.
He showed that these resources will strengthen theircapacity to store and transport vaccines under optimal conditions, preserving their potency and effectiveness from manufacturing to the end user.
Mochoboroane also expressed his profound gratitude to Africa CDC for their invaluable partnership and continuous support. He acknowledged that the collaboration is critical for developing a robust healthcare system that prioritizes the well-being of Lesotho’s citizens and contributes to the global fight against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Dr. Lul Rick, representing Africa CDC, attended the ceremony to formally hand over the state-of-the-art vaccine cold chain equipment and a Toyota LC Pick-up 4WD, valued at USD 113,446, to the government and people of Lesotho.
“I believe this advanced equipment will contribute to vaccine storage and ensuring their potency and safety from manufacturing to the arms,” Rick said.
He highlighted the critical role of this equipment in maintaining the effectiveness of vaccines throughout their journey.
Rick also reiterated Africa CDC’s commitment to bolstering Lesotho’s health security agenda and supporting all African Union Member States.
“This support demonstrates Africa CDC’s dedication to strengthening Lesotho’s health security agenda and its determination to stand together with all African Union Member States in line with the strong mandate given by heads of states and government,” he noted.
This investment reflects Africa CDC’s long-term vision of a healthier, more secure African continent.
Beyond the cold chain equipment, Africa CDC is poised to support the establishment of a world-class Public Health Emergency Operation Centre in Lesotho. Rick announced that Africa CDC would invest USD 500,000 in state-of-the-art equipment and training for frontline health workers. This initiative aims to prepare for the full establishment of the Lesotho National Public Health Institute.
“This support will enhance our ability to respond to public health emergencies and improve our overall health infrastructure,” he stated.
Kimani Muthengi, UNICEF Lesotho Deputy Representative, played a significant role in the handover event, emphasizing UNICEF’s role in managing the procurement of cold chain equipment for African Union member states, including Lesotho.
“The African Union entrusted UNICEF with managing the procurement of cold chain equipment for its member states, including Lesotho,” she explained.
Muthengi pointed out that this trust highlights the strong relationship and credibility that UNICEF has in providing technical support and ensuring value for money in selecting cold chain equipment.
“Our partnership with the African Union is a testament to our shared commitment to strengthening healthcare systems across the continent,” Muthengi added.
She underscored the importance of such collaborations in achieving long-term health goals and improving the resilience of healthcare systems.
