As Lesotho celebrates 200 years of nationhood, a milestone symbolizing unity, peace, and resilience, there is a sense of national pride reverberating across the country. This pride is deeply rooted in the nation’s rich history and culture and is vividly brought to life through the performance and commitment of our national soccer team, Likuena, during the World Cup qualifications.

Against the odds, Likuena has emerged as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Competing in a group with African powerhouses such as Zimbabwe and South Africa, Likuena has surpassed expectations. Remarkably, after two games, the team sits above Nigeria, demonstrating their potential to rise even higher next time.

Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts, and Culture, Honourable Motlatsi Maqelepo, underscores the significance of this achievement: “Likuena’s performance under challenging circumstances is nothing short of heroic. This team embodies the spirit of our nation – resilient, determined, and unyielding.”

However, the journey to continued success demands financial support. Maqelepo passionately appeals to businesses, corporates, and individuals both at home and abroad to sponsor Likuena.

“To sustain our promising run, financial support is crucial. Currently, FIFA is our primary financial supporter, but we need more contributors to ensure our success,” stated Maqelepo.

The national sports policy is clear in its mission to unite the nation through sports and recreation. It aims to enhance national identity and pride through excellent sports performance, contributing significantly to the country’s socio-economic development. Likuena’s inspiring performance is a testament to this vision coming to life.

“Bo Ntate le bo ‘M’e, Basotho ba khabane,” Maqelepo calls out, “Those with the power to influence and make decisions in business, Likuena needs your support. A good performance from our national team will positively impact the entire country, particularly in peacebuilding and socio-economic development.”

The government’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure is also evident. Starting with the renovation of Setsoto National Stadium, the aim is to ensure the teams can play their home games at home.

“This not only boosts team morale but assures sponsors of a return on their investments in Likuena and other sports,” says Maqelepo.

Corporate support has always been the backbone of thriving sports globally. “As the Minister of Sports, I am dedicated to improving governance in sports to ensure transparency and mutual benefits,” Maqelepo affirms.

Lesotho is already receiving support from various companies and individuals, which has significantly contributed to the development and competitiveness of the league.

“Sechaba se khabane,” he continues, “let’s unite behind our national team. Let’s relish this moment where we have transformed from the whipping boys of Africa to a competitive force. Let’s be the talk of a transformed nation in Africa.”

Echoing the powerful words of Nelson Mandela, Maqelepo adds, “One great leader in Africa once said, ‘Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.’ Let’s use this powerful tool to unite us as a nation and give the next generation the opportunity to achieve greatness.”
