On October 17, 2024, coach Shalane Lehohla announced the squad for the Mehalalitoe, the Lesotho Women’s National Football Team, ahead of the highly anticipated Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Championship in Gqerberha, scheduled from October 22 to November 2. The squad features notable players such as Boitumelo Rabale, who has been a standout in recent years, alongside familiar faces Litšeoane Maloro and Mosili Motšoeneng, both of whom play for Royal AM.
As preparations ramped up, Litšeoane and Mosili were among the first foreign-based players to join the team at the Bambatha Tšita Sports Arena. Their early arrival was a testament to the commitment of the squad.
Boitumelo Rabale, recently crowned the South African Football Journalists Association’s (SAFJA) 2023 Woman Footballer of the Year, later joined the camp. The captain of the national team has made significant strides on the international stage, having been named Player of the Tournament at the CAF Women’s Championship and earning the title of Hollywoodbets Super League Player of the Season for two consecutive years. Currently, she leads the league as the top goal scorer and has propelled Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies to the top of the league table. Notably, Litšeoane Maloro is also making waves in the league, ranking 4th among the top goal scorers.
Mehalalitoe will kick off their campaign in Group D, facing Zimbabwe on Sunday, October 27, followed by a match against Mozambique on Tuesday, October 29. A strong performance in the group stage is crucial, as the winner will secure a place in the knockout rounds.
In preparation for the tournament, on Thursday, October 24, the team participated in a safeguarding session led by LeFA safeguarding officer Mr. Mojese Matamane. This session emphasized the importance of player welfare and safety, setting a positive tone before they set off for the championship. Additionally, the squad took the time to lend a helping hand to female inmates at the Lesotho Correctional Services, showcasing their commitment to community service.
The team arrived safely in Gqerberha on October 25 and immediately began their training sessions, eager to put their plans into action. With a blend of experience and fresh talent, Mehalalitoe is poised to make a significant impact in the COSAFA Women’s Championship, representing Lesotho with pride and determination.
