Nyakane rubbishes making promises to recruit Captain Litekanyo Nyakane

Maseru- One of the soldier inmates Captain Litekanyo Nyakane has repudiated making any promise to one of the recruits in exchange for a list of recruits who assaulted him during the search.

Cap.Nyakane said this when being cross examined by a Lawyer of Correctional Officer Mothabeng, who revealed in his testimony before the Commission of Inquiry on the escape of inmates that he requested Mothabeng to give him a list of recruits who assaulted him during the search exercise that was conducted at Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI) on December 22, 2023.

He said he never vowed to Mothabeng that he would erase his name from the list where he is associated in the assault of inmates if he gave him a list of recruits who insulted him during the search.

He also denied promising Mothabeng that he would assistance him in ensuring that his name is not brought upin the Commission.

“That is not true because we engaged in the conversation four days after I was beaten and I was not even mindfulthat a commission of inquiry would be established” he said, stressing that he only wanted to know the recruits who assaulted him during the search.

In the meantime, Nyakane presented before the Commission a list of seven recruits who assaulted him, which he received from Mothabeng. In addition, not a soulof these recruits acknowledged assaulting Nyakane, even the two recruits whom he said he saw assaulting him.

The recruits are continuing to testify before the Commission of Inquiry on the search exercise that was conducted at MCCI which resulted in the assault of inmates, leaving one paralysed.

Meanwhile, Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI) Senior Officers are remaining to repudiate hearing screams from inmates when they were being beatenduring the search exercise.

This occurred when Assistant Superintendent Patrick Mabathoana was giving evidence before the Commission of Inquiry on the escape of inmates, on the search exercise that was conducted at MCCI on December 22, last year.

Assistant Superintendent Mabathoana continued to state that since he arrived at the centre within the facility when the search was conducted, there were no cries from the blocks (A and C) that were searched while he was still there.
