The average annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) logged growth of 1.3%, which falls considerably lower than the $% projected in the NSDP II. The NSDP IT has anticipatedthat maintaining 5% growth over 14 years would double the economy, create 9,900 jobs annually and reducepoverty by 6%.

It arrives at a pivotal moment, highlighting how technology and innovation can drive human development and improve the quality of life for all Basotho. A Comprehensive Analysis for a Brighter Future This report is more than just a document; it is a roadmap that delves deep into the various aspects of human development, covering key areas such as economic growth, education, health, climate action, and gender equality.

Dr Jacqueline Oweya, the UNDP President, emphasized the transformative potential of technology, “By strategically investing in digital infrastructure and establishing robust e-governance systems, we can tackle the challenges that have long hindered our progress.”

The report calls for an inclusive approach to growth, stressing the need to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas. This is crucial to ensure that everyone, regardless of where they live, has access to the benefits of technological advancements. The report makes a strong case for prioritizing marginalized communities, including women, youth, and people with disabilities, to ensure they are not left behind in the digital age.

The report advocates for significant investments in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs. By doing so, Lesotho can develop a skilled workforce that is capable of driving innovation and sustaining a knowledge-based economy. This aligns with global commitments such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace, and Security.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to all contributors and stakeholders who have dedicated their time and expertise to the preparation of this report. Their commitment to advancing human development in Lesotho is evident in the thorough and insightful analysis presented,” said Oweya.

The report is not just a reflection of the past and present; it is a vision for the future. It serves as a valuable resource to guide efforts towards a more equitable and prosperous future for all Basotho.

The Importance of Collaboration crucial to the success of this report was the collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, and the National University of Lesotho. These institutions provided invaluable expertise and dedication in shaping the report.

The Honourable Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane, remarked, “The first Human Development Report introduced a new approach for advancing human well-being. This method puts the needs and choices of individuals at the forefront, promoting an inclusive and equitable environment for all to access health, education, shelter, and security.”

Matlanyane also noted the significant role technology plays in this report, saying, “With the advent of globalization, we aim to find our place in the global economy. Appropriately, the report draws our attention to the importance of technology.”

As Lesotho commemorates 200 years of existence, this report stands as a testament to the nation’s resilience and ambition. The Minister of Finance and Development Planning concluded the launch with a powerful message.

“With pride in being Basotho, let us stand united to work together with a common vision to build Lesotho on the principles and values that our founder, King Moshoeshoe I, cherished,” she said.

The report is not just a document but a call to action, urging decision-makers, the business community, researchers, and all Basotho citizens to join hands in building a brighter, more prosperous future for Lesotho. As Lesotho looks to the future, the 2024 National Human Development Report serves as a hope and a guide for harnessing the power of technology and innovation. By addressing the challenges of today and seizing the opportunities of tomorrow, Lesotho can ensure that all Basotho enjoy a better quality of life, leaving no one behind.
