What you need to cross into South Africa with a foreign-registered vehicle

Crossing into South Africa with a foreign-registered vehicle requires careful preparation. Authorities enforce documentation requirements actively at all border crossings, including those serving travellers from Lesotho.

You will need your passport, a valid driver’s licence, the vehicle’s original registration papers, and a Temporary Import Permit (TIP). You must also formally declare your vehicle upon arrival. The specific requirements differ depending on whether you are driving in from a neighbouring country or shipping a vehicle from overseas.

Driving in from neighbouring countries (SADC/SACU)

If you are entering from Lesotho or another neighbouring state, strict enforcement of vehicle declarations is actively in place at South African ports of entry.

The Temporary Import Permit (TIP) is typically valid for 6 months. You must keep it with the vehicle at all times while in South Africa.

All foreign-registered vehicles must complete a temporary importation declaration with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) at the border post. Failure to do so may result in the vehicle being detained.

Documents required
  • Original vehicle registration papers and a certified copy
  • If financed: a cross-border letter of authorisation from your financial institution, permitting the vehicle to cross the border and signed before a Commissioner of Oaths
  • If you are not the registered owner: a police affidavit and a letter of authorisation from the owner granting permission to take the vehicle abroad
  • If driving a rental: a cross-border letter or authorisation document from the rental company explicitly permitting entry into South Africa

Shipping a car from overseas

If you are flying a car in or shipping it via port from Europe, the Americas, or elsewhere, the process transitions from a temporary visit to a formal import procedure.

Key requirements
  • Carnet de Passage en Douane (CPD): This document — sometimes called a “passport for your vehicle” — is highly recommended or required for temporary tourist imports. It allows the car into the country without paying duties upfront.
  • Import permit: Vehicles must generally meet South African age and emissions standards. An import permit issued by the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) is typically required prior to arrival.
  • Permanent importation: If you intend to leave or sell the car in South Africa, standard import duties apply — typically around 20-25% for light vehicles. Physical inspections are required, and the vehicle must be registered locally, which requires a Traffic Registration Number.
This article provides general guidance only. Requirements may change. Confirm current procedures with SARS or a licensed customs broker before travelling.
