Maseru is under siege. Soldiers from the Lesotho Defense Force have mounted roadblocks at every entry point to the capital, stopping and searching motorists and passengers. What should have been a day of lawful protest has been turned into a show of intimidation.

The military’s sudden presence is widely seen as an attempt to frustrate a legal march against the Matekane regime, with protesters allowed only two hours to demonstrate before being forced to disperse.
