Gem Diamonds recovers sixth large diamond from Letšeng this year

London-listed Gem Diamonds has recovered a 212.49 ct Type II white diamond from its 70%-owned Letšeng mine, in Lesotho.

This is the sixth diamond weighing over 10 ct to be recovered at the mine this year.

The Letšeng mine is located in the Maluti mountains of Lesotho and is renowned for its recovery of large, high-quality, exceptional Type II diamonds. The greater-than-100-ct diamonds recovered at the mine contribute 70% to 80% of Gem’s yearly revenue.

Majority of Basotho who commented on the announcement of this remarkable find on social media were not happy, questioning the impact of such recoveries in their daily lives.

Some accused the mine of not doing enough to change the lives of diamonds.
