On this day, 2 August 2008, former first black president of South Africa and former leader of the African National Congress (ANC), Nelson Mandela, attended the very last political rally of the ANC.
He asked for unity and claimed that he would be nothing without the ANC.
He had only just turned 90 years old.
He died 5 years later on 5 December 2013
