Gem Diamonds To Be De-Registered For Breaching Lesotho Mining & Minerals Act?

Maseru – Yearn for Economic Sustainability (YES) expressed its grievances after they engaged the committee of natural resources as well as the Ministry of Natural Resources to intervene in a matter they believed had to be dealt with promptly.

They have since resorted to writing to the Right Honorable Kime Badenoch who is the Secretary of State for Business and Trade (UK) to intercede because neither the committee assigned, nor the Ministry is acting accordingly.

Background history states that, “in 2005 the government of the Kingdom of Lesotho and Gem Diamond Limited established a joint venture called Letšeng Diamond (Pty) Ltd, where Gem Diamonds Limited has 70% shares and The Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho on behalf of Basotho has 30%…” This mining agreement was reached in terms of Section 44 of the Mines and Minerals Act, 2005.
