The Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL) 2nd Annual Taxpayers Appreciation Day brought a vibrant atmosphere to Maseru on Friday as the people came together to honour those making a significant impact on the nation through their tax contributions.
In this ceremony, five strategic partners and six outstanding compliant taxpayers were recognised for their exemplary commitment to tax compliance. The strategic partners, praised for their invaluable contributions such as expert advice, information sharing and developmental support, exemplified how collaboration can lead to a thriving revenue system.
The RSL’s public appreciation serves not just as a pat on the back but as a clarion call to continue these essential partnerships that bolster Lesotho’s economic resilience.
This year’s awards for compliant taxpayers celebrated those who have diligently adhered to tax and customs laws over the past three years, starting in 2023. Though the selection criteria were tough, it was fair—only those who filed and paid their taxes on time and demonstrated exceptional revenue growth were honoured.
The Commissioner General of the RSL, Mathabo Mokoko, articulated the purpose of the celebration, emphasising that every tax contribution, no matter how small, is a vital building block for Lesotho’s progress.
“Every contribution, no matter how small, is a brick in the foundation of Lesotho’s development,” she remarked, highlighting the critical role taxes play in funding education, healthcare, infrastructure and social empowerment programs.
Mokoko urged taxpayers to uphold their responsibilities, noting that the synergy between government and citizens is more crucial than ever
She asserted that as Lesotho looks to the future, it should work on reducing its reliance on foreign aid and focus on mobilising its own resources, pointing to the importance of tax collection as a measure of economic health and an engine for growth and investment.
Adding to the day’s motivation, Minister of Public Service Mputi Mputi echoed these sentiments, reminding attendees that the prosperity of Lesotho hinges on the collective efforts of its people.
He stressed that taxes paid are the lifeblood of the nation, allowing the government to invest in vital areas that foster a prosperous and equitable society.
Attendees were encouraged to view tax compliance as a shared responsibility, a partnership that drives progress rather than a punitive obligation. The message was clear: Together, they can build a brighter future for all.
The day was enriched by the recognition of strategic partners, including the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF), Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS), African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the American Embassy, each honoured for their unique contributions to fostering a culture of compliance.
Congratulations also went out to this year’s compliant taxpayers, representing a range of industries, including Industrial and Mining Solutions (PTY) LTD, BME Lesotho (PTY) LTD, Zurary (PTY) LTD, Goldrush Lesotho (PTY) LTD, Moores Roland (PTY) LTD, and Mascon Freight (PTY) LTD. Teboho Ralikhomo also received recognition for excellence in Simplified Business Taxation.
With a spirit of unity and celebration, the Taxpayers Appreciation Day served as a powerful reminder of the critical role that every taxpayer plays in shaping the future of Lesotho.
