The first commoner queen consort in the history of Lesotho 

On this day in 1976, a girl was born in Leribe who would one day make history as the first Mosotho commoner to marry into the Royal Family.

On this day, 2 June 1976, Karabo Anna Mots’oeneng was born in Leribe. She would go on to become one of the most significant figures in modern Lesotho royal history.

She met King Letsie III in 1996 while pursuing her studies at Machabeng College. After four years of courtship, she made history by becoming the first Mosotho commoner to marry into the Royal Family as the King’s first and only wife, and the second Mosotho woman to be party to a non-polygamous royal marriage.

Today, Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso marks 50 years of life and 26 years of marriage.
