The name Lesotho is officially adopted

On this day 8 July 1967, hardly a year after the independence of the country, the newly established Lesotho government notice number 77 was published in the Gazette, which related to Section 72(2) of the Lesotho Independence Act of 1966.

The notice officially changed the name of the territory from Basutoland to the Kingdom of Lesotho upon its independence on October 4, 1966.

The government notice from 1967 was issued in the wake of the implementation of the new constitution and governmental structure for the newly independent nation of Lesotho, which had attained the independence from Britain the previous year.
