Maseru — His Excellency Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, President of the Republic of Botswana, has embarked on a historic four-day Official Working Visit to the Kingdom of Lesotho, running from 15 to 18 July 2025. He Jet down At Moshoeshoe 1 International AirPort this morning at 10:45 am.
The visit seeks to deepen bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on water resource collaboration, trade, and regional development.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
President Boko is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including:
• Hon. Dr. Phenyo Butale, Minister of International Relations
• Hon. Omneetse Ramogapi, Minister of Water and Human Settlement
Key engagements during the visit include:
• A royal audience with His Majesty King Letsie III
• A courtesy call on The Right Honourable Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekaneat the State House
• The signing of a Bi-National Commission (BNC) Agreement, replacing the 2003 Joint Commission on Technical and Economic Cooperation
This BNC Agreement represents a shift toward more structured and strategic bilateral collaboration between Botswana and Lesotho.
Lesotho–Botswana Water Transfer Project Site Visit
On 16 July, President Boko will visit the proposed site of the Lesotho–Botswana Water Transfer Project in Mafeteng District. This flagship project underscores a joint commitment to sustainable water security, economic integration, and regional resilience against climate variability.
Honouring Shared Culture and Diplomacy
To conclude the visit, President Boko will attend the 62nd birthday celebrations of His Majesty King Letsie III on 17 July in Teyateyaneng, Berea. The celebration reflects the close cultural and diplomatic ties between the two countries, reinforcing people-to-people relations.
A New Chapter in Regional Partnership
Lesotho’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations has hailed the visit as a “significant milestone” in fostering long-term diplomatic, technical, and socio-economic cooperation. The newly established BNC is expected to open opportunities in trade, technology exchange, infrastructure development, and policy coordination.
