President of the Republic of Botswana, Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, will undertake a three-day working visit to Lesotho from 15th to 17th July 2025, following an invitation by Lesotho’s Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane.
The visit aims to deepen bilateral cooperation between the two southern African nations, which already collaborate in key sectors including education, defence, security, water resource management, and judicial affairs.
During the visit, President Boko will meet with His Majesty King Letsie III to discuss matters of mutual interest and regional importance. High on the agenda are climate-resilient development initiatives, cross-border water security projects, and strategies to strengthen socio-economic ties between Botswana and Lesotho.
One of the highlights of the visit will be a tour of the proposed Lesotho-Botswana Water Transfer Project (L-BWT) at Tsinyae. This initiative is designed to promote integrated water resource management, address growing water security concerns, and foster sustainable regional development through improved climate adaptation.
President Boko will also attend the 62nd birthday celebration of King Letsie III on 17 July 2025, affirming Botswana’s respect for and solidarity with the Kingdom of Lesotho. In addition, the President will engage with members of the Batswana diaspora living in Lesotho, updating them on Botswana’s national development agenda and listening to their views on emerging national issues.
Accompanying President Boko will be Dr. Phenyo Butale, Minister of International Relations, as well as senior government officials. The delegation is scheduled to return to Gaborone on the evening of 17 July 2025.
During the President’s absence, Vice President Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe will assume the role of Acting President of the Republic of Botswana.
This visit underscores the commitment of both Botswana and Lesotho to advancing peaceful cooperation, shared infrastructure development, and regional integration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
