Lesotho’s decision to send the National Team to play its home matches in South Africa once again, despite promises of refurbishing Setsoto Stadium, is a disappointment for the nation’s soccer fans and its players. This recurring situation presents a troubling lack of commitment from our government to developing local sports infrastructure, discouraging our athletes and hampering the growth of football in the country.
Refurbishing Setsoto Stadium was long touted as a milestone for Lesotho football, symbolizing progress and the government’s dedication to supporting the sport. But the delays and unfulfilled promises have led to players and fans feeling neglected and demoralized. Instead of playing in a familiar and patriotic environment, our athletes are forced to compete abroad, far from the hearts of local supporters.
Such decisions not only diminish national pride but also impact the development of talent. Young players dream of representing their country on home soil, in stadiums that showcase their hard work and aspirations. When these dreams are deferred repeatedly, it discourages future generations from pursuing football seriously.
The continued use of South African stadiums for Lesotho’s home games is a disgrace that reflects poorly on the management and prioritization of sports development in Lesotho. If the government truly values its sportsmen and its sporting future, it must take concrete steps to refurbish and maintain Setsoto Stadium as a proper home ground.
Our athletes deserve a stadium they can call their own, a symbol of national pride, progress and support. The government and relevant authorities must heed the disappointment and take immediate action
