China and Lesotho share a partnership in health built not on declarations, but on a continuous, measurable presence. Over nearly three decades of cooperation, the collaboration has centred on deploying medical teams, constructing modern facilities, and standing alongside Lesotho through successive public health challenges.
A Medical Presence Spanning Generations
Since 1997, China has continuously dispatched medical teams to Lesotho, a commitment now entering its 29th consecutive year. More than 200 Chinese doctors and nurses have served communities across Maseru, Leribe, and remote mountain villages, providing outpatient care, emergency surgeries, free clinics, and mobile outreach.
The reach of the 19th medical team extended from Mokhotlong to Quthing. It is no surprise that many Basotho have come to call these visiting physicians and nurses “angels in white.” Beyond direct treatment, each team invests in local capacity, training health professionals at every posting and steadily building Lesotho’s long-term healthcare workforce from the ground up.
“Many Basotho affectionately call them angels in white.”

China’s commitment extends beyond personnel. The newly constructed Maseru District Hospital stands as the most visible landmark of this partnership. Spanning 23,900 square metres and representing an investment of over 430 million yuan, the facility brings advanced diagnostic and surgical capabilities to Lesotho for the first time at this scale.
For the first time, Basotho patients can access advanced medical care close to home. The hospital also functions as a teaching and research hub, ensuring that modern medical expertise takes root locally and that the next generation of Lesotho’s medical professionals trains in a world-class environment.
Empowering Women and Girls
Health cooperation also means addressing the most vulnerable. In partnership with UNAIDS, China and Lesotho are jointly advancing a targeted programme titled “Eliminating the Triple Threat in Girls and Young Women in Lesotho,” designed to protect the health, dignity, and future of young women. The initiative is set to officially launch in April 2025.
A Partnership With Purpose
China–Lesotho health cooperation is not a transactional arrangement. It is a sustained relationship, measured in decades of medical missions, in the scale of facilities built, in the professionals trained, and in the programmes targeting those most at risk. From the earliest medical teams of 1997 to the Maseru District Hospital and the forthcoming women’s health initiative, the partnership continues to deepen. Its most consequential chapters may still be ahead.
