Lesotho’s BCM Leader Faces Treason Charge Over Alleged U.S. and Israel Links

By Tholoana Lesenya

MASERU – The atmosphere in Courtroom One was heavy with anticipation this morning as Dr Tšepo Lipholo, leader of the Basotho Covenant Movement, walked in under close guard. Dressed in a faded jacket, he kept his gaze fixed ahead, avoiding the small knot of supporters who had managed to squeeze into the public gallery.

Since his arrest on 2 July 2025, Lipholo has faced a string of serious charges. Today, before Magistrate Lebusa Tšosane, prosecutors added the most severe yet: treason.

Reading from the charge sheet, the state alleged that Lipholo sought military assistance and financial backing from the United States and Israel. According to prosecutors, the resources were meant to aid individuals he is said to be training in South Africa as part of a plan to “reclaim land” from South Africa.

The courtroom stirred as further allegations were read. Lipholo is accused of forming his own cabinet, composing a national anthem, and designing a flag, actions the prosecution says point to the creation of a government-in-waiting operating in defiance of the Kingdom of Lesotho.

Magistrate Tšosane listened without interruption, his pen scratching notes as the accusations were read. Lipholo’s legal team, seated to his left, exchanged quiet words but made no immediate objection.

Outside the courthouse, a small group of party loyalists chanted slogans in his defence. Inside, the proceedings moved quickly, with the magistrate setting a High Court bail hearing for tomorrow. The session is expected to draw significant political and public attention.

Treason in Lesotho – The Law and the Stakes

What is Treason?
Under Lesotho’s Penal Code, treason covers acts aimed at overthrowing the King, government, or constitutional order by force. It includes attempts to aid a foreign power in hostile acts against the Kingdom, or to set up an alternative government within its borders.

The Allegations Against Lipholo

  • Foreign Assistance: Prosecutors allege he sought military and financial backing from the United States and Israel.
  • Armed Training: Said to have trained individuals in South Africa for operations to “reclaim land” from South Africa.
  • Parallel Government: Accused of forming his own cabinet, composing a national anthem, and designing a flag.

Potential Penalties
The maximum sentence is the death penalty, although it is rarely applied in modern practice. Alternative sentences include life imprisonment or long-term custodial terms, depending on the court’s findings.

Why This Case Matters
Treason trials in Lesotho are rare and carry deep political significance. With Lipholo already facing charges of sedition, human trafficking, and insulting the Royal Family, the outcome could have major political and legal implications.
